In perhaps its most divisive and controversial decision since Dred Scott, the Supreme Court overturned the infanticide and homicide laws in abortion cases in all fifty states by legalizing child-killing procedures from the moment of conception until just before the moment of birth. Delivered on January 22, 1973 the Roe v. Wade decision sent shock waves throughout the nation--the effects of which are still felt. In a remarkably argued majority opinion, Associate Justice Blackmun introduced several creative constitutional innovations--including a heretofore unrecognized “right to privacy.” Like the infamous Dred Scott slavery decision before it, this case actually only exacerbated the debate the court set out to resolve.

Interestingly, in 1996 Norma McCorvey, the woman named as “Jane Roe” in the case, asked the Supreme Court to reverse their ruling in light of the fact that the case was based on fraudulent evidence. The court declined.

Dympna Caelrhynn was born near the end of the eighth century, the eldest daughter of a heathen Celtic prince, Eadburh. When she was still just a child, her beloved Christian mother was claimed by a plague. Apparently stricken mad with grief, Eadburh conceived a perverted passion for his daughter. In order to escape his incestuous intentions, she fled abroad with her chaplain Gerebernus, first to the newly Christianized port city of Antwerp, and then to the small village of Gheel about twenty-five miles away. There she began to rebuild a life for herself.

With the help of Gerebernus, she devoted herself to the care of the needy and the forlorn. She rescued dozens of orphaned children from a life of begging in the streets. She gave shelter to the lame, the mentally impaired, and the infirm. She fearlessly lobbied for justice for the poor. And she fought to expose the dark secrets of abortionists whose flourishing contraband was wreaking havoc among the peasantry.

There in the Flemish lowlands, Christian medievalism was progressively making its mark. As a result, many of the most insidious practices from antiquity were passing from the scene—including the age old pagan procedures of infanticide, abandonment, and exposure. Even so, when there were serious problems with a pregnancy or when handicapped children were born, many families reverted to the pagan practices.

Dympna boldly challenged this, arguing that if human life is sacred, then all human life must be protected—regardless of how unlovely or inconvenient it might be. She sought to demonstrate that there was no such thing as an unwanted child. She made her home a haven for the otherwise unwanted. In the span of just three years, her household grew to include more than forty handicapped children and another twenty mentally impaired adolescents and adults.
Before long, she had gained a remarkable reputation for selflessness, graciousness, and charity. Eadburh, upon hearing of his daughter's whereabouts, followed her to Gheel. There was an awful confrontation. When she refused to return home with him, he flew into a rage and brutally slew her on this day in 795.

Amazingly, Dympna's vision did not die with her that day. Stricken with sorrow, the citizens of Gheel decided to continue her mission of mercy. That work continues to the present day. It includes a hospital for the mentally ill, a foundling center, an adoption agency, and the world's largest and most efficient boarding-out program for the afflicted and disturbed run as a private association by the Christian families of Gheel.

The Scriptures command a reverence for life. Embedded in every book and interwoven into every doctrine is the unwavering standard of justice and mercy for all: the weak and the strong, the great and the small, the rich and the poor, the lame and the whole, the young and the old, and the born and the unborn. This truth is at the very heart of the Gospel.

The Bible declares the sanctity of life in its account of God's creation:

Woe to him who strives with his Maker. Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him who forms it, "What are you making?" Or, shall your handiwork say, "He has no hands?" Woe to him who says to his father, "What are you begetting?" (Isaiah 45:9-12).

The Bible declares the sanctity of life in its description of God's sovereignty:

For You have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your Book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them (Psalm 139:13-16).

From Genesis to Revelation (Genesis 2:7; Revelation 22:17), in the Books of the Law (Exodus 4:12; Leviticus 19:16), in the Books of History (Judges 13:2-24; 1 Samuel 16:7), in the Books of Wisdom (Psalm 68:5-6; Proverbs 29:7), in the Prophetic Books (Amos 1:13; Jeremiah 1:5), in the Gospels (Matthew 10:31; Luke 1:15; 41-44), and in the Epistles (Galatians 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:22), the pro-life message of the Bible is absolutely inescapable.

It is this "Word of Life" (Philippians 2:16) that we have believed--and it is this Word that we must act upon faithfully.

This is why the early church was so adamant about the connection between the Gospel and the sanctity of life.

The Didache was a compilation of Apostolic moral teachings that appeared at the end of the first century. Among its many admonitions, it asserted an unwavering reverence for the sanctity of life, "There are two ways: the way of life and the way of death, and the difference between these two ways is great. Therefore, do not murder a child by abortion or kill a newborn infant."

The Epistle of Barnabas was an early second century theological tract that was highly regarded by the first Christian communities, Like the Didache, it laid down absolute strictures against abortion and infanticide, "You shall love your neighbor more than your own life. You shall not slay a child by abortion. You shall not kill that which has been given life by God."

In the third century, the brilliant and prolific Tertullian composed his Apology. There he connected the sanctity of life with the very integrity of the Gospel, "Our faith declares life out of death. Therefore, murder is forbidden once and for all. We may not destroy even the fetus in the womb. To hinder a birth is merely a speedier man killing. Thus it does not matter whether you take away a life that is born, or destroy one that is coming to the birth."

Ambrose, the renowned and revered bishop of Milan, was forthright in his condemnation of those engaged in child-killing procedures, "They deny in their very womb their own progeny. By use of parricidal mixtures they snuff out the fruit of their wombs. In this way life is taken before it is given. Who except man himself has taught us ways of repudiating our own children."

Athenagorus and Augustine, Athanasius and Basil, Cyril and Jerome: the fact is, every father of the early church was unanimous in their defense of the sanctity of life.

As we celebrate Christmas, let us remember that at the heart of the message of Bethlehem is the fulfillment of the promise of God to destroy the final enemy: death.

Calvin on the Sanctity of Life

John Calvin, the leader of the Swiss Reformation said:

“The unborn child...though enclosed in the womb of its mother, is already a human being...and should not be robbed of the life which it has not yet begun to enjoy. If it seems more horrible to kill a man in his own house than in a field, because a man's house is his place of most secure refuge, it ought surely to be deemed more atrocious to destroy an unborn child in the womb before it has come to light.”

Defense of the innocents, he argued was so integral and indistinguishable from a defense of the Gospel that believers ought to be just as willing to risk severe persecution for the one as for the other:

“Now to suffer persecution for righteousness' sake is a singular comfort. For it ought to occur to us how much honor God bestows upon us in thus furnishing us with the special badge of His soldiery. I say that not only they that labor for the defense of the Gospel, but they that in any way maintain the cause of righteousness suffer persecution for righteousness. Therefore, whether declaring God's truth against Satan's falsehoods or in taking up the protection of the good and innocent against the wrongs of the wicked, we must undergo the offenses and hatred of the world, which may imperil either our life, our fortunes, or our honor.”

“Never will I sit motionless while directly or indirectly apology is made for the murder of the helpless.”

Theodore Roosevelt was convinced that the family was the fundamental cornerstone of society. Anything that eroded the family’s strength or vitality, anything that sought to undermine its authority or integrity, and anything that subverted its holy purpose or virtue was a dastardly threat to everything that he held to be good and right and true.

In his State of the Union message in 1905, he highlighted his grave concern for America’s deteriorating moral climate in general and the family’s diminished cultural relevance saying: “The transformation of the family is one of the greatest sociological phenomena of our time; it is a social question of the first importance, of far greater importance than any merely political or economic question can be.”

He went on to describe a rather simple agenda for protecting the family against the encroachment of those men and women he called “the foes of our own household.” He said: “There are those who believe that a new modernity demands a new morality. What they fail to consider is the harsh reality that there is no such thing as a new morality. There is only one morality. All else is immorality. There is only true Christian ethics over against which stands the whole of paganism. If we are to fulfill our great destiny as a people, then we must return to the old morality, the sole morality.”

His analysis was utterly scathing: “All these blatant sham reformers, in the name of a new morality, preach the old, old vice and self-indulgence which rotted out first the moral fiber and then even the external greatness of Greece and Rome.”

In a very real sense, Roosevelt was the original family values social conservative.

It is not surprising then, that when a new wave of Eugenic Racists and Child-Killing Abortionists made their way onto the American scene and into the public arena, Roosevelt was one of their chief opponents—in fact, apart from the hierarchy of the Catholic church, he was one of their only opponents.

He railed against their “frightful and fundamental immorality,” calling their cause a submission “to coldness, to selfishness, to love of ease, to shrinking from risk, and to an utter and pitiful failure in sense of perspective.” As he argued: “Artificially keeping families small inevitably involves prenatal infanticide and abortion--with all its pandering to self-indulgence, its shirking of duties, and its enervation of character.”

But he did not simply hurl invectives their way--he acted. He was instrumental in mobilizing Republicans, Democrats, and Progressives against the awful specter of Eugenic Child-Killing—building a solid coalition that was to resist the siren’s call of abortion for another three-quarters of a century. As he said: “The foes of our own household are our worst enemies; and we can oppose them, not only by exposing them and denouncing them, but by constructive work in planning and building reforms which shall take into account both the economic and the moral factors in human advance. We in America can attain our great destiny only by service; not by rhetoric, and above all not by insincere rhetoric, and that dreadful mental double-dealing and verbal juggling which makes promises and repudiates them, and says one thing at one time, and the directly opposite thing at another time. Our service must be the service of deeds.”

He went on to assert: “The most dangerous form of sentimental debauch is to give expression to good wishes on behalf of virtue while you do nothing about it. Justice is not merely words. It is to be translated into living acts.”

The infamous Eugenic Racist, Margaret Sanger, who founded the vast Planned Parenthood abortion network, rightly saw Roosevelt as “a holdover from the old Christian religion,” and thus a serious obstacle to her revolutionary program which called for “no Gods and no masters.” She railed against him as “a disgraceful blight upon any modern scientific nation’s intent to advance.”

For a leader who had staked his reputation and risked his career for the sake of traditional family values, that was high praise indeed. For, no commendation can be greater than the condemnation of one’s fiercest sworn enemies.

Crafting a Winning Plan

Samuel Taylor was a proto-typical mild mannered small town pharmacist in the mid-nineteenth century. A family man, community leader, and life-long Methodist, he had a natural Midwestern aversion to controversy.

But when the daughter of one of his customers was nearly poisoned by a dose of mail-order abortifacient pills, he sprang into action. He discovered that the abortifacient business was booming all over the United States--and that it was an entirely unrestricted, unregulated, and unmonitored industry.

Without the benefits of a government agency, an institutional largess, or a corporate sponsor, he began a one-man educational campaign--first with his fellow pharmacists, later expanding to physicians, and finally with state legislators--to alert the public to the physical dangers and the moral liabilities of the child-killing trade. Taylor testified before the Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana legislatures--winning their support for a ban on the sale of all chemical parricides and abortifacients--and he drafted model legislation that was approved by fourteen other states.

New Hate Groups!

File this one in the You've-Got-to-Be-Kidding-Me Department: the Southern Poverty Law Center has now listed most of the nation's most prominent and respected pro-life, pro-family, Christian organizations on its roster of dangerous "Hate Groups."

The notoriously Off-the-Left-Side-of-the-Political-Chart organization is now targeting such mainstream ministries as the American Family Association, Concerned Women for America, Coral Ridge Ministries, Liberty Council, Family Research Council, Traditional Values Coalition, and the National Organization for Marriage.

According to Gary Cass, of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission, "The SPLC has been reduced to a far left propaganda organization that uses hype and hysteria to enrich a few liberal attorneys at taxpayer expense and has long out lived its usefulness."

Indeed. In fact, increasingly the SPLC has itself become so entranced by its marginal prejudices against Christians and Conservatives that it may very well qualify as a "Hate Group" itself--in accord with its own definition.

Surely, they've set themselves up to be "hoisted by their own petard," as Shakespeare might put it.

In the two decades since this landmark book was first published, four different presidents have occupied the White House, seven justices have come and gone on the Supreme Court, and eleven sessions of Congress have held sway in the Capitol.

These federal magistrates have faced economic booms and busts. They have weathered terror attacks and foreign wars. They have witnessed the collapse of the Soviet empire and the rise of the al Qaeda menace. They have wrangled over corporate bailouts and health-care reforms. They have endured Tea Party protests, campaign scandals, personal embarrassments, and policy failures. They have been plagued on every side by mounting demands, frustrated expectations, declining resources, and diminished prestige.

Through it all, the divisiveness of the abortion issue has remained constant. The many and varied political turns of events during the past twenty years have done nothing to ameliorate it—much less, to resolve it. If anything, the divide over abortion has become more pronounced, more acrimonious, and more entrenched. While political gridlock on nearly any and every other issue ultimately has been overcome, no rapprochement on the issue of abortion is anywhere in sight.

Of course, matters have not exactly been helped by the fact that the politically protected international abortion business has grown into a multibillion–dollar industrial complex. Utilizing its considerable wealth, manpower, and influence, the abortion industry has proven itself adept at muscling its way into virtually every facet of modern life. It now plays a strategic role in the health and social-services community. It exerts a major influence on education, providing the majority of sex-education curricula and programs in both public and private schools. It carries considerable political clout through lobbying, campaigning, advocacy, and litigation. It is involved in publishing, broadcast media production, judicial activism, public relations, foreign aid, psychological research counseling, environmental policy-making, sociological planning, demographic investigation, pharmacological development, contraceptive distribution and sales, mass advertising, and public legal service provision.

As if that were not enough, the current Democratic administration in Washington—aided and abetted by the Democrat-controlled Senate—is the most ardently pro-abortion in American history. With a bevy of executive orders, appointments, and administrative policy changes—to say nothing of its 2,407-page monolithic, partisan “health–care reform” legislation, which removed the longstanding ban on federal funding of abortions in favor of a much more easily overturned executive order—the abortion industry has logged more gains during this administration’s short tenure than in the rest of its history combined.

Yet the great divide persists. Despite its obvious cultural clout, its cavernously deep corporate pockets, and its carefully crafted public relations efforts, the abortion industry has yet to prevail in the battle for the hearts and minds of most Americans. Public opinion polls conducted during the first year of the Obama administration found that 51 percent of Americans now call themselves “pro-life” on the issue of abortion, while only 42 percent call themselves “pro-choice.” In addition, the number of Americans who favor making it more difficult to obtain an abortion is up six percentage points in just five years. In 2005, 59 percent of respondents agreed it would be good to reduce abortions. Today, 65 percent take this view. One poll also found that fewer Americans, and fewer pro-life advocates, are willing to compromise on abortion by finding some “middle ground.” Indeed, support for finding a middle ground on the abortion issue is down twelve percentage points among conservatives and six points among all Americans. Yet another poll found that 58 percent of Americans say abortion is morally wrong most of the time. Just 25 percent disagree, and the rest have no opinion. The poll found women are more strongly pro-life than men, with 64 percent of women asserting that most abortions are morally wrong, a view shared by just 51 percent of men. Meanwhile, still another survey found a majority of Americans, 52 percent, think it is too easy to get an abortion in America. That's up seven percentage points from two years ago, when 45 percent thought it was too easy.

As a result, Dr. Sproul’s incisive analysis in Abortion: A Rational Look at an Emotional Issue is as relevant and necessary today as it was in the last decade of the twentieth century. Indeed, he points the way to the only possible resolution of this deeply emotional issue.

This is has always been an enormously helpful book. Now it has been brought completely up to date and is more useful than ever. It is my prayer that God may be pleased to use this book as a means to provoke the church to boldly stand for truth, justice, and mercy in the midst of this poor, fallen world.

Mildred Jefferson: Pro-Life Stalwart

Mildred Jefferson, pioneer physician, teacher, reformer, mentor, and friend to an entire generation of pro-life leaders has gone home to be with the Lord at age 84.

Born in Pittsburg, Texas, in 1926, the daughter of a schoolteacher and a Methodist pastor, she was raised in the beautiful East Texas town of Carthage and graduated from Texas College in Tyler. She earned a master’s degree from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Then, she went on to become the first African-American woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School and the first woman to be a surgical intern at Boston City Hospital.

Dr. Jefferson gained renown as a clinical professor of surgery at Boston University Medical School--and over the years was awarded honorary degrees by 28 colleges and universities.

She was one of the early, visionary founders of the modern pro-life movement. A tireless servant-leader, she helped to establish more than 30 pro-life organizations, boards, and committees including the National Right to Life Committee--of which she remained the at-large director to the day she died.

Her credo was unequivocal, "I am at once a physician, a citizen, and a woman, and I am not willing to stand aside and allow this concept of expendable human lives to turn this great land of ours into just another exclusive reservation where only the perfect, the privileged, and the planned have the right to live."

Dr. Jefferson was a dear and gracious friend to me, a ready counselor during the days when I first was researching and writing Grand Illusions: The Legacy of Planned Parenthood, and a faithful supporter of LifeNet, the organization we established together to stem the rising tide of RU-486 and other pharmaceutical abortifacients.

Though we mourn the loss of one of America's greatest heroes, we rejoice that Dr. Jefferson is now in the presence of her Savior, beholding the glory of the risen Christ.

It is sad that organizations ostensibly committed to very worthy causes align themselves with the insidious child-killing industry. But, that is just what the United Way and the March of Dimes have done for years. Now, add the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to that list.

As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, Komen is committed "to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures." Largely thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the organization has become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Alas, it has also become a significant contributor to the abortion monolith, Planned Parenthood. Indeed, during the past five years breast cancer donors have, unbeknownst to them, poured nearly $4 million into the already bloated coffers of the organization responsible for more than a quarter of all the abortions performed in the United States and perhaps a third of all the child-killing procedures world-wide. Rather than focusing on saving lives, Komen has become a cozy partner with Planned Parenthood in the nasty business of snuffing out lives.

October is the month for breast cancer awareness, but it has become increasingly difficult for those who actually care about women's health issues to lend their support to the cause because of this brazen betrayal by Komen.

There is a critical vote coming up regarding abortion in the US Senate, probably this coming Tuesday, September 21. It's a vote on the "National Defense Authorization Bill" and Majority Leader Harry Reid is trying an end run to get some "thank you gifts" and "election incentives" to his core supporters. How? By adding three very controversial amendments to this defense bill:

The first would allow abortions to be performed on any military base in the world, utilizing personnel, supplies, and facilities paid for with our tax dollars, which, under current law, has been prohibited since 1966; another provision in the law which would be changed prohibits the use of DOD funds for abortion except to save the life of the mother;

The other two amendments would repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy, which will impose open homosexuality upon the U.S. armed services, without waiting for the pending military report which is analyzing the effect of such a policy; and add a very controversial immigration rider, the so-called "Dream Act." This would legalize and offer a path to citizenship to some 2.1 million "young" illegal immigrants initially and then, by using chain migration, will legalize and offer a citizenship path to their parents which would then total 6.3 million.

So, what do any of these three amendments have to do with defense spending? Umm, well, nothing. Absolutely nothing--which epitomizes what is so, so wrong with our current Congress and why the upcoming election is so important.

But, before November we still have work to do--and fast. This week, in fact.

Senator John McCain plans to lead a filibuster against the bill. He needs 41 votes in order to sustain the filibuster, which is possible if all the pro-life Senators stick together and refuse to invoke cloture (a procedure to cut off debate and bring the bill to the floor for a vote) as Reid will request.

An avid supporter of the military, Senator McCain knows that the needed military funding can easily be provided with a continuing resolution minus these extremist maneuvers. If the amendments are voted on individually, grassroots pro-lifers would have to rally 51 votes to defeat each them--and it is not likely that we'd be able to muster them in the current Senate configuration. Thus, sustaining the filibuster (only 41 votes needed) is our only realistic chance to stop them in the Senate!

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Please contact your two US Senators and urge them, particularly if they have professed to be pro-life in the past, to stand firm with Senator McCain as he tries to keep this bill with its non-germane, politically-motivated amendments from coming to the floor of the Senate, where we would be forced to endure yet another pro-abortion debacle.

This is a huge diversion from the normal rules of the Senate and is a real desperation move by Reid to try and ram these "payback" amendments through before the Democrats stand to lose their majority in the November elections.

Time is short--please flood the Senators with your phone calls. Be knowledgeable, polite, but firm in your request that they stand with Senator McCain and vote against cloture. It is probably our only way to stop these additions to the bill.

On this day in 1939, Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood announced the organization’s new “Negro Project” in response to requests from southern state public health officials—men not generally known at that time for their racial equanimity. “The mass of Negroes,” her project proposal asserted, particularly in the South, still breed carelessly and disastrously, with the result that the increase among Negroes, even more than among Whites, is from that portion of the population least intelligent and fit.” The proposal went on to say that “Public Health statistics merely hint at the primitive state of civilization in which most Negroes in the South live.”

In order to remedy this “dysgenic horror story,” her project aimed to hire three or four “Colored Ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities” to travel to various Black enclaves and propagandize for birth control.

“The most successful educational approach to the Negro,” Margaret wrote sometime later, “is through a religious appeal. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the Minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”

Of course, those Black ministers were to be carefully controlled—mere figureheads. “There is a great danger that we will fail,” one of the project directors wrote, “because the Negroes think it a plan for extermination. Hence, let’s appear to let the colored run it.” Another project director lamented, “I wonder if Southern Darkies can ever be entrusted with . . . a clinic. Our experience causes us to doubt their ability to work except under White supervision.” The entire operation then was a ruse—a manipulative attempt to get African Americans to cooperate in their own elimination.

The program’s genocidal intentions were carefully camouflaged beneath several layers of condescending social service rhetoric and organizational expertise. Like the citizens of Hamelin, lured into captivity by the sweet serenades of the Pied Piper, all too many African Americans all across the country happily fell into step behind Margaret and the Eugenic racists she had placed on her Negro Advisory Council.

Soon taxpayer-supported clinics throughout the South were distributing contraceptives to African Americans and Sanger’s science fiction dream of discouraging “the defective and diseased elements of humanity” from their “reckless and irresponsible swarming and spawning” appeared at last to be on the road to fulfillment. Planned Parenthood had its first real success in social engineering.

Born in Northern Ireland to a wealthy Presbyterian family, Amy Carmichael (1867-1951) became one of the best known missionaries of the first half of the twentieth century. Her ministry took her first to Japan, then to Ceylon, and finally to the Dohnavur province of India.

Although the brutal Hindu traditions of sarti and immolation—burning widows alive on the funeral pyres of their deceased husbands—had been legally banned, to her horror she discovered that ritual abortion and female infanticide were still quite common. In addition, many of the young girls that she had come to work with were still being systematically sold off as slaves to the nearby pagan temples in order to be raised as cult prostitutes.

She immediately established a ministry to protect and shelter the girls. Although she had to suffer the persecution of various
Hindu sects and the bureaucratic resistance of the British colonial government, Carmichael built an effective and dynamic ministry renowned for its courage and compassion.

Sadly, many of her fellow missionaries in India—having partially accepted the presuppositions of Planned Parenthood’s Malthusian thought—believed that her effort to build an orphanage and school was actually a "worldly activity" that distracted her from the "saving of souls." To such accusations she simply replied, "Souls are more or less firmly attached to bodies."

Since her death in 1951, her Dohnavur Fellowship has continued to carry on ministries of evangelism, education, and medical aid among the poor and helpless. It remains one of the most dynamic Christian work on the Indian subcontinent.

Often called Childermas, this day on the Christian calendar has traditionally been celebrated as the Feast of the Holy Innocents. It is a day which solemnizes the slaughter of the children of Judea by Herod the Great following the birth of Christ.

It has always been the focus of the Christian’s commitment to protect and preserve the sanctity of human life—thus serving as a prophetic warning against the practitioners of abandonment and infanticide in the age of antiquity, oblacy and pessiary in the medieval epoch, and abortion and euthanasia in these modern times. Generally set aside as a day of prayer, it culminates with a declaration of the covenant community’s unflinching commitment to the innocents who are unable to protect themselves.

Virtually every culture in antiquity was stained with the blood of innocent children. Unwanted infants in ancient Rome were abandoned outside the city walls to die from exposure to the elements or from the attacks of wild foraging beasts. Greeks often gave their pregnant women harsh doses of herbal or medicinal abortifacients. Persians developed highly sophisticated surgical curette procedures. Chinese women tied heavy ropes around their waists so excruciatingly tight that they either aborted or passed into unconsciousness. Ancient Hindus and Arabs concocted chemical pessaries--abortifacients that were pushed or pumped directly into the womb through the birth canal. Primitive Canaanites threw their children onto great flaming pyres as a sacrifice to their god Molech. Polynesians subjected their pregnant women to onerous tortures--their abdomens beaten with large stones or hot coals heaped upon their bodies. Egyptians disposed of their unwanted children by disemboweling and dismembering them shortly after birth--their collagen was then harvested for the manufacture of cosmetic creams.

Abortion, infanticide, exposure, and abandonment were so much a part of human societies that they provided the primary literary liet motif in popular traditions, stories, myths, fables, and legends. The founding of Rome was, for instance, presumed to be the happy result of the abandonment of children. According to the story, a vestal virgin who had been raped bore twin sons, Romulus and Remus. The harsh Etruscan Amulius ordered them exposed on the Tiber River. Left in a basket which floated ashore, they were found by a she wolf and suckled by her. Romulus and Remus would later establish the city of Rome on the seven hills near the place of their rescue. Likewise, the stories of Oedipus, Jupiter, Poseidon, and Hephaistos, were all victims of failed infanticides.

Because they had been mired by the minions of sin and death, it was as instinctive as the autumn harvest for them to summarily sabotage their own heritage. They saw nothing particularly cruel about despoiling the fruit of their wombs. It was woven into the very fabric of their culture. They believed that it was completely justifiable. They believed that it was just and good and right.

The Gospel therefore came into the world as a stern rebuke. God, who is the giver of life (Acts 17:25), the fountain of life (Psalm 36:9), and the defender of life (Psalm 27:1), not only sent us the message of life (Acts 5:20) and the words of life (John 6:68), He sent us the light of life as well (John 8:12). He sent us His only begotten Son—the life of the world (John 6:51)--to break the bonds of sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:54-56). For God so loved the world, that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

We've All Won the Nobel Booby Prize

How do you win the Nobel Prize in just 12 days? Well, according to political pundit, columnist, and blogger Tommy De Seno over the last decade, the only discernible requirement has been to be "critical of George W. Bush--see Al Gore, Mohamed El Baradei, and Jimmy Carter."

But, even by that standard, Barack Obama's giddy cheerleaders in Oslo have broken new ground. The deadline for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize nominations was February 1. The president took office just 12 days before that--on January 20.

So, what did the Celebrity-in-Chief do in those first 12 days in the White House? What did he do to deserve the accolades of the Nobel Committee? According to his own published White House schedule, he essentially threw some parties, skipped church, threw some more parties, had a few meetings with his staffers, made a couple of speeches, skipped church again, ordered the release of federal funding in order to export America's abortion holocaust to the rest of the world, threw some more parties, and watched the Super Bowl.

No really. That's about it. And for that, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Here's how De Seno recounts this prize-winning record:

January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.

January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an “open house” party at the White House.

January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how’s that working out?)

January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.

January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.

January 25: Skipped church.

January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.

January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.

January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.

January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.

January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.

January 31: Took the day off.

February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

So there you have it. The short path to the Nobel Peace Prize: Party, go to meetings, skip church, release federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries, party some more.

To which De Seno simply adds: "Good grief."

Once Upon a Time

Louis Jennings was a pioneer in American journalism. The editor of the New York Times during the last decades of the nineteenth century, he helped to build the reputation that paper--ultimately making it the premier daily in the entire nation. He was also a committed Christian and a stalwart in the struggle for life.

On this day in 1870, Jennings began a crusade against abortion on the editorial pages of his paper that ultimately lead to the criminalization of the procedure in every state in the Union. He understood the power of the printed page and utilized it expertly. He knew only too well that it would be necessary to provoke a public outrage over the issue, not simply a stiffening of legislation that might go unenforced.

It was his leadership, and the national visibility of the Times that ultimately swayed both the legal and the medical establishments to publicly denounce abortion as murder--ultimately outlawing it in every state and territory in the land.

Of course, that was all long, long ago.

The Obama-Effect

It is not just the International Olympic Committee that President Barack Obama is having a hard time convincing these days. A new Pew Research Center Poll released today shows support for legal abortions has dropped precipitously since just last year. The poll joins a handful of others from earlier this year confirming there is a growing shift towards the pro-life perspective, largely exacerbated by Obama’s extremist position on abortion and his unprecedented action to dismantle legal protections for women, children, and families.

A majority of Americans now identify themselves as "Pro-Life." In addition, the number of Americans who favor making it more difficult to obtain an abortion is up six points in just two years.

In 2005, 59% of respondents agreed it would be good to reduce abortions. Today 65% take this view, an increase of six points.  And more than three-quarters--some 76%--continue to favor requiring minors to obtain the permission of a parent before having an abortion.   The Pew poll also found fewer Americans, and fewer pro-life advocates are willing to compromise on abortion by finding some "middle ground." Indeed, support for finding a middle ground on the abortion issue is down 12 points among conservatives and six percent among all Americans.

Michael New, a political science professor at the University of Alabama, says the trend is very clear in the pro-life direction, as evidenced by the polling results. "This is consistent with other surveys released this spring by groups like Gallup which show that an increasingly higher percentage of Americans are willing to describe themselves as Pro-Life," he said.

All this is very bad news for a president and his administration--having seen his push for dramatic and radical change stymied at every turn. But then, that may well be good news for all of the rest of us.

Pro-Lifer Murdered

An pro-life activist has been shot and killed this morning across the street from Owosso High School while students were getting off buses at the beginning of the school day. According to local new reports, the victim, James Pouillon, has long been known in the small Michigan community between Flint and Lansing as the "abortion sign guy."

According to Owosso Police Chief Michael Compeau, Pouillon, 63, was shot several times by a 33 year-old male driving by in a car. The shooting took place shortly after 7:30 AM and caused officials to place the high school in lock-down.

It will be interesting to see if the President of the United States will issue any sort of statement on this murder--just as he did when the infamous late-term abortionist George Tiller was killed earlier this year.

James Pouillon, a retired auto-worker at the Flint Buick plant, was a dedicated pro-life protester whose life was largely devoted to quietly, gently, but resolutely standing in the gap for the unborn. He was a familiar figure on the streets of Owosso, where he staged silent prayer protests for a portion of each day almost every weekday during the last ten years. May God be pleased to raise up many more faithful witnesses of the truth like him. After all, "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church."

Once upon a time, long ago, and far away (in 1971, prior to Roe v. Wade), Ted Kennedy was actually pro-life. He wrote:

“While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized—the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old."

He then asserted:

“On the question of the individual’s freedom of choice there are easily available birth control methods and information which women may employ to prevent or postpone pregnancy. But once life has begun, no matter at what stage of growth, it is my belief that termination should not be decided merely by desire."

Finally, he concluded saying:

“When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family, and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception."

Of course, immediately after the infamous Roe decision, Kennedy reversed his position. He became the Senate's most ardent defender of abortion on demand. Over the course of nearly four decades, he was responsible for the widest expansion of the pro-death, child-killing agenda in American history.

Alas, the man many are now lauding as the "Lion of the Senate" was anything but the principled, courageous defender of the least and the last that he first set out to be.

President Barack Obama has made it mandatory for every American taxpayer to participate in his massive escalation of the Abortion holocaust by opening up a new federally-funded market for body parts.

That is the gist of "new ethics rules" the president mandated for the National Institutes of Health this past week. Obama reversed protections that prevented the funding of new stem cell research destroying human life.

Ironically, such research has yet to help even a single patient, unlike adult stem cell research--which has helped patients with more than 100 diseases and medical conditions and which the Bush administration supported with hundreds of millions in federal funding.

Thus, while opening the door to the purposeful creation and destruction of human life for scientific experimentation, the new guidelines simultaneously divert funds away from that research which has already proven to be so beneficial.

With Obama-Care, powerful abortion industry lobbyists and Washington, D.C. bureaucrats have launched a massive effort to mandate taxpayer-funded abortions as part of their proposed trillion-dollar health care takeover. This abortion industry power-grab is attempting to:

- Impose one of the cornerstones of the "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA) by stealth.

- Force taxpayers to fund a huge abortion industry bailout--something the majority of Americans oppose, and certainly cannot afford in these tough economic times.

- Mandate that virtually every American be forced into a health plan that includes abortion coverage.

The story was first reported by the New York Times in an interview of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The justice's blithe comments about using abortion to control unwanted segments of the population were shocking, creepy, scandalous, and brazen.

Not surprisingly, her Eugenic-tone created shock-waves just about everywhere--well, just about everywhere except in the mainstream media. As Damian Thompson pointed out in the London Telegraph, "The mainstream media have completely ignored the story about one of the most powerful people in the country essentially endorsing Eugenics.... What the heck is going on here? What are we to make of the media’s complete silence on this issue? They don’t see a little Eugenics between friends as a big deal? They thought it was taken out of context?"

He goes on to assert, "As the large metropolitan newspapers die, they’re wondering why. This is why. You might think the New York Times might want to trumpet its exclusive. But the mindset of that pompous, prickly, boring, self-regarding publication is so overwhelmingly liberal that it didn’t even realise it had a story on its hands."

Of course, none of this is really news. As Linda DeMerle has observed the Left has never abandoned its historically cozy ties to the "scientific racism" of Eugenics pioneers like Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger. It's just the same ol' same ol' repackaged for modern consumption.

Making Tax-Paid Abortions Permanent

Last week, members of a Senate committee voted for an amendment to make permanent, President Barack Obama's overturning the Mexico City Policy. That is the order that stopped sending taxpayer funds to groups that promote and perform abortions in other nations.

Obama reversed the Mexico City Policy in January and polls after that showed a strong majority of Americans opposed his taxpayer-funded abortion agenda.

Not content to rely on Obama's opening of the abortion-funded floodgates in other countries, members of the Senate proposed an amendment to the State, Foreign Operations Appropriations bill to make the move federal law.

The move is important because it would make it so a pro-life president could not restore the Mexico City Policy and its tax-funded abortion limits. Instead, Congress would have to approve a new law overturning the amendment.

Senator Frank Lautenberg, a New Jersey Democrat, offered the pro-abortion amendment along with Democratic Senators Pat Leahy, of Vermont, Barbara Mikulski, of Maryland, Pat Murray, or Washington, and pro-abortion Republican Susan Collins of Maine. On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the amendment to permanently overturn the Mexico City Policy on a 17-11 vote.

Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, said the vote "is just going to create a really big fight" and pro-life groups will plan an all-out effort on the Senate floor for a vote on an amendment to delete the pro-abortion language. Brownback and other pro-life lawmakers may go as far as launching a filibuster against the State, Foreign Operations Appropriations bill of the language making the abortion funding federal law is not removed.

The pro-life policy had been in place during the entirety of the Bush administration and Obama rescinded it on his first week in office.

A February Gallup poll found strong majority of Americans are upset that Obama would send their tax money overseas to perform and promote abortions. It found 58 percent of Americans opposed Obama's pro-abortion decision while just 35 percent supported it and 7 percent had no opinion.

Breaking down the new poll further, Gallup asked respondents to state their opinion on seven major actions President Obama has taken since becoming president. Overturning the Mexico City Policy engendered more opposition than any of the other actions and it had the lowest level of support.

The pro-abortion move also evoked the least support from Democrats and the most opposition from Republicans and independents. While 59 percent of Democrats supported the move, it came in last among the seven total issues on which Gallup surveyed. Only 8 percent of Republicans backed overturning the limits as did just 33 percent of the independent voters surveyed -- with opposition higher about this action than any other Obama has taken a president.

ACTION: Contact your two U.S. senators and urge strong opposition to the Lautenberg amendment against the Mexico City Policy. President Obama's Supreme Court nominee has said that she has "never considered whether an unborn child has any rights."

No really. I am not making this up. The person our president wants to serve on the nation's highest court says that she has never really given any consideration to the single most bedeviling civil rights issue of her generation. Oh my! What an admission!

In a conversation with Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), chairman of the Senate Steering Committee, Sonia Sotomayor also called into question the applicability of the Second Amendment. And while that is certainly disturbing news, the fact that this sitting federal judge, a confessing Catholic, has such a rigid, closed, ideological worldview that she has never even thought through the issue of abortion is stunningly horrific.

Sotomayor is either lying or evasive or irresponsible or all three together.

Not surprisingly, DeMint now questions whether the nominee has what he believes is required of a Supreme Court nominee--an "unwavering commitment to the Constitution and equal justice for all Americans." Umm, well, yeah. I guess so. Let's just hope there are enough other Senators who display a modicum of epistemological self-consciousness to stand steadfast in opposition to this nomination.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received Planned Parenthood’s highest honor—the 2009 Margaret Sanger Award in Houston on March 27, 2009 at a gala, which took place just a few blocks from the construction site of America’s largest-ever abortion facility. Clinton was lauded as a “champion of women’s health and rights throughout her public service career.”

Planned Parenthood is of course, an organization whose founder Margaret Sanger embraced ideological Eugenics and targeted “the unfit” for “extinction.” Recently, Planned Parenthood has been involved in serial statutory rape cover-ups, fraud, and has petitioned for the construction of abortion clinics under false pretenses.

Its very name, the Margaret Sanger Award, is a tribute to a woman whose whole life’s mission was to “build a race of thoroughbreds” and "eliminate human weeds." Planned Parenthood’s long campaign to promote unregulated abortion on request, celebration of sexual libertinism, Eugenic racism, and revolutionary human callousness is, according to the Family Research Council, "the worst foreign policy message our nation could send."

Agreed. Alas, now the insidious organization has crowned the Secretary of State as their anointed messenger.

A Sad Day

In other words, we who were once at enmity with God ourselves are now to love as the Father loves; we are to love others just as He has loved us.

Thus, as you might well suppose, I am deeply grieved that late-term abortionist Dr. George Tiller was murdered this morning in Wichita--and that his family, his church, and his community were all subjected to the horror of such unwarranted violence.

This is a very sad day for us all--for the pro-life movement, for the church, and for the nation.

Are Obama and Sotomayor Out of Step?

For the third time in a month, another public opinion poll has been released demonstrating that a majority of the American public is pro-life. Two weeks ago it was the Gallup poll that got the headlines, as it was the first time in that poll's history that it showed over half of the public as holding a pro-life position. Then last week, there was a Fox News poll, indicating the same thing: more Americans are pro-life than "pro-choice".

The third poll, this one from Rasmussen, should put to rest exactly how most Americans feel about the issue. The survey actually asked a different question than the others and found that 58 percent of Americans say abortion is morally wrong most of the time. Just twenty-five percent disagree and the rest had no opinion.

The poll found women are more strongly pro-life than men with 64 percent of women asserting that most abortions are morally wrong, a view shared by just 51% of men. Meanwhile, another Rasmussen survey question found a majority of Americans, 52 percent, think it is too easy to get an abortion in America. That's up seven percent from two years ago when 45 percent thought it was too easy.

The two important points to take away from this are first, that the pro-life position is indeed a majority position in this country, and second, that the pro-life position has been gaining momentum at precisely the moment President Obama seems to be steering his administration in the opposite direction--witness his nomination of a radical judicial activist and career left-wing pro-abort, Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

A hidden video has captured a conversation between a Planned Parenthood abortion counselor in Memphis coaching a 14-year-old to lie to a judge about her 31-year-old boyfriend.

Tennessee Code 37-1-605 requires health professionals to report suspected cases of sexual abuse of minors to law enforcement immediately.

The Planned Parenthood counselor tells the young girl on camera, “Look, if we keep this conversation I’m gonna have to talk to my manager and yeah, [your boyfriend]’s gonna get in trouble,” but promises, “I’m not gonna tell anybody, ok?” She adds, “And please don’t say that I told you this.” When the girl tells the counselor she thinks her boyfriend will get in trouble if her parents find out, the counselor advises her to lie about the man’s age when speaking to a judge in order to obtain a bypass of Tennessee’s parental consent law for abortion: “Don’t mention it. Just say you have a boyfriend 17 years old…whatever.”

The video sting operation was conducted by the nonprofit organization Live Action. It is the fifth installment in Live Action’s “Mona Lisa Project,” a nationwide undercover investigation that documents Planned Parenthood’s repeated noncompliance with state mandatory reporting laws for sexual abuse of minors. Tennessee is the third state to be implicated in the controversy, along with Arizona and Indiana.

Despite the mounting evidence of Planned Parenthood's institutionalized indifference to statutory rape and sexual abuse of children, no criminal charges have been filed.

Prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 5 percent of the total services provided to women--while abortions accounted for 95 percent of the services, according to Planned Parenthood's own figures.

You probably saw the terrible story this week of a private plane that crashed into a Montana cemetery--killing 7 children and 7 adults. What you may not have seen are the even more terrible ironies surrounding the sad circumstances. According to Gingi Edmonds , a freelance pro-life activist, writer, and photographer from Hanford, California, the whole tragedy is fraught with irony:

The Catholic Holy Cross Cemetery, where the crash occurred, is owned by Resurrection Cemetery Association in Butte. It contains a memorial for local residents to pray at the "Tomb of the Unborn." This memorial, located a short distance west of the church, was erected as a dedication to all babies who have died because of abortion.

That alone makes the story more than a little ironic. But according to Edmonds, there is more:

The family who died in the crash near the location of the abortion victim's memorial, is the family of Irving 'Bud' Feldkamp, owner of the largest for-profit abortion chain in the nation. Family Planning Associates was purchased four years ago by Irving Moore "Bud" Feldkamp III, owner of Allcare and Hospitality Dental Associates and CEO of Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bernardino. The 17 California Family Planning clinics perform more abortions in the state than any other abortion provider--Planned Parenthood included--and they perform abortions through the first five months of pregnancy.

Although Feldkamp is not himself an abortionist, he reaps profits of blood money from the tens of thousands of babies that are killed through abortions performed every year at the clinics he owns. His business in the abortion industry was what enabled him to afford the private plane that was carrying his family to their week-long vacation at the Yellowstone Club, a millionaires-only ski resort.

The plane went down on Sunday, killing two of Feldkamp's daughters, two sons-in-law and five grandchildren along with the pilot and four family friends. The plane, a single-engine turboprop flown by Bud Summerfield of Highland, crashed into the Catholic cemetery and burst into flames, only 500 feet from its landing destination. All aboard were killed.

The cause of the crash is a mystery. The pilot, who was a former military flier who logged over 2,000 miles, gave no indication to air traffic controllers that the aircraft was experiencing difficulty when he asked to divert to an airport in Butte. Witnesses report that the plane suddenly nosedived toward the ground with no apparent signs of a struggle. There was neither a cockpit voice recorder nor a flight data recorder onboard, and no radar clues into the planes final moments because the Butte airport is not equipped with a radar facility. Some speculate that the crash was due to ice on the wings, but this particular plane model has been tested for icy weather and experts have stated that ice being the cause is unlikely.

Edmonds concludes:

In my time working for Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, I helped organize and conduct a weekly campaign where youth activists stood outside of Feldkamp's mini-mansion in Redlands holding fetal development signs and raising community awareness regarding Feldkamp's dealings in child murder for profit. Every Thursday afternoon we called upon Bud and his wife Pam to repent, seek God's blessing and separate themselves from the practice of child killing.

We warned him, for his children's sake, to wash his hands of the innocent blood he assisted in spilling because, as Scripture warns, if "you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you". (Ezekiel 35:6)

A news source states that Bud Feldkamp visited the site of the crash with his wife and their two surviving children on Monday. As they stood near the twisted and charred debris talking with investigators, light snow fell on the tarps that covered the remains of their children.

I don't want to turn this tragic event into some creepy spiritual "I told you so" moment, but I think of the time spent outside of Feldkamp's--Pam Feldkamp laughing at the fetal development signs, Bud Feldkamp trying not to make eye contact as he got into his car with a small child in tow--and I think of the haunting words, "Think of your children." I wonder if those words were haunting Feldkamp as well as he stood in the snow among the remains of loved ones, just feet from the "Tomb of the Unborn?"

I only hope and pray that in the face of this tragedy, Feldkamp recognizes his need for repentance and reformation. I pray that God will use this unfortunate catastrophe to soften the hearts of Bud and Pam and that they will draw close to the Lord and wash their hands of the blood of thousands of innocent children, each as precious and irreplaceable as their own.

Edmonds closes with the sober covenantal call of Deuteronomy: "I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then." (Deuteronomy 30: 19)

Obama's Poll Plunge

In addition, according to the Wall Street Journal, the American electorate is perhaps more polarized than ever this early into a new administration. And only less than a quarter of Americans believe that the federal government truly reflects the will of the people.

Cecile Richards, the infamous President of Planned Parenthood, along with a host of others in the pro-abortion constellation of stars are now saying that they will not try to pass the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), this year. Apparently, a groundswell of opposition has put a bit of a damper on their grand plans to make medical child-killing entirely unrestricted. But, be forewarned: according to Mary Ann Kreitzer, "What they can't get in one giant step, they will happily take by inches."

In an attempt to protect the unborn by resolving the question of when life begins, U.S. Sens. Jim Inhofe, (R-Okla.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), John Thune (R-S.D.), David Vitter (R-La.), and George Voinovich (R-Ohio), have re-introduced the Life at Conception Act, legislation that declares that life begins at conception and the unborn to be “persons” under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

Sen. Jim Inhofe said, “Our government has both a moral and constitutional obligation to protect the sanctity of human life. With Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress and a new Democratic President, we must fight twice as hard for the sanctity of life and promote our Life at Conception Act.”

Sen. Roger Wicker, said: “In Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court refused to define when life begins, thus delegating this determination to the legislative branch. This legislation clearly defines that life begins at the moment of conception, a belief that is commonly held by most Americans and is something science has long proven.”

Sen. Jim DeMint said, “We must defend innocent, unborn children and extend to them the same rights of ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ enjoyed by every American, as set forth in the Declaration of Independence and protected by our Constitution.”

Sen. Mel Martinez said, “This effort is about fostering a culture of life, where every life is considered sacred, every child is celebrated, and life at all stages is given the dignity that it deserves.”

Sen. John Thune said, “Unborn children, as distinct, unique human beings, are fully deserving of our society’s attention, provision, and care. I believe this amendment would take a strong step toward achieving this goal.”

Sen. David Vitter said, “As science continues to advance, the evidence that life begin at conception is becoming more and more irrefutable. This bill is critical to the fight to protect the culture of life, especially as we face an administration and new Congress that seems determined to advance the agenda of a practice that a great number of Americans find abhorrent.”

In its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, the court acknowledged that “if this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case [i.e., “Roe”], of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.”
